Hey Bobbie,
That's a great site! Thanks for posting it. Have you ever tried using the magnet system?

I have not; however, I have never attempted to build anything. Construction of an ARF is very tasking for me. I hope to learn how to build. I have been spending time with Warren trying to learn as much as I can.

Looking at box of sticks is quite intimidating to me.

I used to build wood and plastic models as a kid. I really enjoyed it. I started out with RC last spring by building an ARF. Now, I'm putting together a 4-star 60 kit. I think it's going fine, but who knows what a master modeler would think! Anyway, I'm having a lot of fun putting it together. Just taking it a piece at a time. The hardest part is starting. I think lots of people would be glad to help you if you need it.

One thing that helped me was a thread on RC Universe that described the experiences of someone else that built my kit. It allowed me to learn from his mistakes. I'm sure you could find a similar thread for nearly any kit. Here's the link that I read:

Hey Bobbie, If you are interested in building a kit, I think that the Hog Bipe is as easy as any and makes a good airplane, flies great and looks great. Josh has one that was an ARF. I built one a couple years back from a kit. I had a 91 4 stroke on it. That is what is in the one Josh has. I'll try to send picture. Of course the color scheme is up to you.

Cool site Bobbie.

Gilbert,
Just get you a Birch door any size, push pins stick in it easily and it's FLAT. That the most important thing, you don't really need an expensive building board rig.:D

I have a Jeep Racer that really looks cool. Maybe this project will start soon.

Darren,
I've been using 2 foot by 4 foot ceiling tiles sitting on a ping-pong table. The setup works great. But I hope to build a real bench this summer so I can play ping-pong again.

I never heard of the magnetic tables before and was curious to see if anyone in the club liked them.

It is a box of sticks. The kit is currently at Lew Branson House. I went to kinkos and made a copy of the plans to keep the original in good order.

Lew has his about 70-80% done. His was purchased about 60% built.

I wil have to go to Lew's house and get the information. If you want you can make a copy of the plans at Kinkos it cost me 21.00 dollars.

Howdy All.. seen this fourm on club site.. NICE!
I gotta say airfieldmodels.com is a great site for serious builders
Lowes has some really cheep hollow door cores for a base and I use
a piece of drywall... cheep also. the t-pins stick very well and the surface
is very stable and "flat". Building is a great time.. but covering can be pretty umm.. have fun..

Also try carl goldbergs "tiger series" kits.. great manual/kit and easy enough for me to build.

I have a question for the guys that are seasoned builders.

I have plans for the first plane I built (red thing in the sites new pics). The plane is a super easy build.. but I want to try a P-38ish version

Question is.. how do you make wing ribs?.. I have a few "ideas"
-- cut a template and use a xacto knife to cut one by one?
-- draw the ribs on a piece and use a scrollsaw?
-- stack and tape several pieces of balsa then trace template then saw?

I would love to make a plane from absolute stock nothing.. anyone know where I can find more info also?

To build from just a set of plans isn't that hard, if you have plans that aren't from a kit, kit plans don't always have all the detail because some of the parts are pre cut. It's called Scratch building, you can go at it a couple of ways. First you can cut everything yourself, very time consuming. Second, you get a kit cutter to cut the major stuff like wing ribs fuselage formers ect., there are a couple around. There is actually one in Goodlettsville, TN. TOP NOTCH products, http://www.topnotchkits.com/index_files/slide0001.htm (http://www.topnotchkits.com/index_files/slide0001.htm)
It cost you, but not that bad. If you have a lot of stuff to cut it's well worth it. Hope that helps. Now wing ribs, if you have a constant chord wing, one that has all the ribs the same. Make a template from some 1/8 inch ply 2 of them and sandwich your balsa rib stock between them and run 2 screws through the whole thing to hold it together. Now cut them out, sand them to shape, and cut all necessary holes. When you’re completely done take out the screws. If the wing has a Tapered chord, find the ribs that are the same and make your templates for each group that are similar, and follow the previous steps. Hope this helps. Instead of using screws to hold a stack of balsa ribs, I use a small drill then use round tooth picks or small dowels to hold them togather.
